The flag from the Eureka Stockade was born out of The flag from the Eureka Stockade was born out of rebellion against a corrupt government and  has come to be a national symbol for Australia. On Novemeber 29 1854 10,000 men swore allegiance to it and in the ensuring fight against government soldiers, 22 miners and 7 police offiers were killed.

Highly toxic, it gave the hatters severe tremors, distorted vision, speech problems and possibly hallucinations. It's surmised this is where "Mad as a Hatter" derives. Lewis Carroll ran with this concept in 1865 and created the iconic character in Alice in Wonderland. He was marvelously voiced in Disney's 1951 animated classic by Ed Wynn. (An amazing actor who turned down the role of the Wizard in Wizard of Oz as he thought it was too small!)
