"Millions of human beings in Ireland have nothing "Millions of human beings in Ireland have nothing to eat" So wrote John Mitchell in 1844 about the Great Famine. An activist and journalist, Mitchell was a staunch advocate of the Irish not being exploited by the English. As a consequence, he was deported for 14 years in 1848. Ultimately arriving in Van Dieman's Land (now Tasmania, in Australia) it was in 1853 that he escaped and managed to get to New York. He was a strong supporter of slavery and wrote many papers to that effect, as well as his continued belief in Irish Home Rule. In 1875 he returned to Ireland after being invited to contest an election and while travelling there in February was voted in to Parliament. He however died only weeks later on March 20, 1875.

Between 1841 and 1850, 49 percent of the total emi Between 1841 and 1850, 49 percent of the total emigrants to the United States were Irish. This was a migration brought about by desperation. With manipulating landlords and poor agricultural practices, Ireland found itself in an horrific situation where the population were starving to death, despite record exports of food to the rest of the world.
This illustration was from the London news, 1849 and is described thusly:
The Sketch of a Woman and Children represents Bridget O'Donnel. Her story is briefly this:-- '. . .we were put out last November; we owed some rent. I was at this time lying in fever. . . they commenced knocking down the house, and had half of it knocked down when two neighbours, women, Nell Spellesley and Kate How, carried me out. . . I was carried into a cabin, and lay there for eight days, when I had the creature (the child) born dead. I lay for three weeks after that. The whole of my family got the fever, and one boy thirteen years old died with want and with hunger while we were lying sick.
